Please understand that in order to make work and maintain my practices I have learned I must say no to most requests.
I am a proponent of lifestyle design and right now I am choosing to live a more contemplative life. When most folks are strapping on a bullhorn in an effort to expand their platform and widen their reach I keep being guided to go deeper, not bigger. I am human and fallible and it is sometimes difficult to resist jumping on this bandwagon and soliciting the likes and rewards that seem to come from pandering to the ego’s insatiable need for attention. I do not think I am alone in my need for more stillness and less distraction, something to balance out those auto-play videos and images that need to keep changing every 3 seconds.
I fail at it sometimes and find myself off chasing the shiny things, but I keep coming back to this deepening, to creating more centeredness, more stillness, more healthy playfulness, more powerful stories and expanded awareness of awareness for myself and others. So, that said, as much as I would like to, I am unable to respond personally to enquires and most comments unless it is about a purchase or an offer of support for The Vesica Piscis Center. I have added this page to try to address the many requests for work, attempts at contact and questions I receive daily. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Do you sell your artwork, or prints?
Sometimes. I am now choosing to sell very few originals to help support me and an art and spirituality center I am founding. There are many works I will not show online or anywhere, except for this center, as I have plans to display them together in a brick and mortar space that will serve as a place of pilgrimage for visitors to experience them with the intention they were made with—as conduits to more awakened states of being. Until that space is built or found I am working out of my own home and studio.
I open my studio once or twice a year by announcement. I also offer studio visits by appointment—for serious buyers only, there is never any sales pressure or obligation to buy anything, but you do need to be actively looking for and in the position to purchase art for me to stop what I am doing and open my studio for you. I am sorry to have to be so direct and if I had infinite time and means I would let everyone come on by, but I clear my and my associate’s schedule to take the time to prepare my space for visitors and I have had too many want to just drop by for a private viewing accompanied by tea and biscuits when I need to be working.
My drawings, paintings, mixed-media pieces and altars with paintings range in price from $5,000-$175,000. Preliminary drawings, sketches and studies can be very affordable, from $200-$3000. These are often offered on my website. If you looking to purchase art, let me know what your price point is within the above range and anything else that is relevant, like about what scale or what kind of energy you want it to have and I will let you know if I have any works that suit your needs. It is not always better to have too many choices, like giant art fairs or bloated websites, it means you have to take time to sort through a lot of stuff that does not suit your purpose or budget. It is far better to let me know what you may want, in a general way and maybe something about you and I can show things specifically catered for you. I represent myself now, so contact me directly. Because I am looking to fund an art center I am willing to sell and make some exchanges to help fund it, but I live modestly and make sure I am financially solvent, so I really am only interested in making a sale if it is a good fit. My images have an energetic signature and they require the right relationship to a space and a person, so if I do not have something for you then I will sincerely thank you for your interest and will suggest some other artists in an effort to help you get what you need. I am always more interested in making work than in trying to sell it…and yet it sells, so I consider myself fortunate and and I am very, very appreciative of my supporters and collectors. Thank you.
Do you teach?
Always. It is honorable work. I feel the need to share and expand what I know, so I do teach at an area college and I run a small group once a week in my home studio. It has taken me a long time to learn to maintain the balance of the importance of my own practice with helping others develop theirs.
I run my own classes and workshops.Teacher, facilitator, collaegue. Everyone regardless of experience level starts with the same 7 week course and must take it twice before taking anything else. for those at their beginning level for anyone who wishes to gain command of a visual language and at a more advanced level for those who view visual art and creative practice as a means of deep personal and spiritual work. We focus both on centering and contemplative topics while also developing the artistic skills needed to express these ideas and spaces. The skill aspect of art comes from disciplined practice and it takes time, I repeat that…it takes time and loving dedication to learn it, but it can be learned and it is not that hard unless one chooses to make it so. The ideation part, my favorite part, is also a skill that can be learned, as are presence and self expression. Put them all together and you have something. Put them all together and you can channel stuff from the ether. With the exception of a savant or 2, One can not play the piano without knowing the keys, note and chords, if you’ve ever heard a child banging away on the pianos and making and ear splitting cacaphany then you know pure feeling and self expression doesn’t cut it. But just playing the notes without feeling or interpretation is sterile. We need it all, you can not channel without capacity for language.
You don’t need me or my classes or anybody else’s if you have access to a library or museum, but it can be better, faster and more fun than going it alone. Anyone can learn without a classes or groups, especially with everything online now, but a physical group creates a unique experience and provides a real sense of community. Many people tell me they have a hard time getting started or maintaing a practice without a class or a group and this is NORMAL, do not feel bad about it. The lone wolf creative is a legend, most humans need some support and direction. What I aim to do is reduce the amount of time it takes to learn to draw, paint etc. I spent a hell of a lot more time than I should have had someone organized how to learn in a more efficient sequence. Almost everything they tell you to do in art school isn’t wrong it is just in the wrong order or in no order at all. I am not the best in every area: draftsmanship, conecpt development, value and color relationshps, composition etc, but I am very good in many of them and proficient in anything I teach and most importantly I can communicate it well, I am extremely kind and supportive, but I am also direct and I swear a lot. Sometimes people want to go off to study with someone they think is a rock star because then they too can be a rockstar only to find out their teacher can’t explain what they do nor are they willing to take the time to really try for you. When I see now how much money I spent and time I wasted to learn things that are actually truly easy to grasp when the info is organized well…and the performance fear is minimized I could be angry, but to I charge $500 per 7-week course of study. I have run this for 1 person up to 9 max. If you are in the Philadelphia area and are interested contact me with a paragraph about who you are and 3-5 images in one email and I will send you some info. I teach students of all experience levels as long as they are earnest and serious and know that all classes start and end on time with a short meditation as part of the practice.
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
I have a very few images available of real limited edition prints. Usually from 3-10 impressions each.
What do I mean by real? I mean seriographs, lithographs and etchings. Limited editions came about because the various methods of reproducing images had actual limitations to how many times they could be used. Etchings, lithographs etc could only make so many impressions before the reproductive quality became poor. They truly were limited.
It is has become very popular to sell Giclees as limited editions and I do this too, but the size of these editions are decided as an arbitrary number and then assigned value based on their perceived popularity and scarcity. So while I have questioned this practice, it seems here to stay and it does make art accessible to more collectors which I think is a good thing. A few of my works utilize both digital and traditional methods and Giclees are also the best option to produce physical art when work is created or modified in a digital environment. Giclees are AMAZING in their quality and if done properly, at much higher cost on archival papers with lightfast inks, they should last for many generations and they seem to be good investments. The Limited Edition Giclees I started offering only 6 months ago have already doubled in value and all proceeds from the sale of prints will go towards The Vesica Piscis Center.
but limiting the number of giclees made is creating an arbitrary manufactured scarcity. Manufacturing scarcity is a way of trying to motivate people to buy out of fear or desire for status. It is very effective and temporarily satisfying to both parties, but it is also kinda sleazy. Look at the horrors of the diamond trade.
produce some signed limited edition giclee prints with lightfast ink and on archival papers ranging from $260-$1200 for individual prints in editions of 50-300 and am in the process of making some boxed sets from $1800-$7000 in editions of 50.
Where can I find your writings?
There are some essays here and some stories here. Online and print on demand only.
Sorry, I almost never accept commissions anymore. Commissions and freelance work used to be my financial stability and I learned a lot from doing them, but I now devote my time to personal and spiritually focused projects. If you have something very special in mind that is in alignment with what I do and you are able to make a substantial contribution toward the goal of an art center, then we can discuss it. I will sometimes accept commissions for custom scultperal door knockers. Prices for these start at $200,000.
I often create works as comprehensive series of images and am interested in creating suites of work for new construction, universities or sacred spaces. I would be very interested in this type of commissioned work.
I like to work with other artists, but I seldom collaborate do not collaborate with other writers on picture books or graphic novels. While I do my best to deal with all enquries, please note that I don’t read manuscripts, do folio reviews or respond to submissions, so please don’t interpret my silence as a bad review!
If you are an individual or company hoping that I will make an exception for a particular project request, I can only reiterate than I am not seeking new projects or opportunities. I’m also not seeking representation by most galleries or agencies. I have nothing against galleries, a good one is priceless, but I have found none that have been a good fit for me. If you are a blue chip gallery and are interested in representing my work then contact me and I will be open to discussing it. Anyone else please don’t. And if you are a a pay-to-play gallery and you contact me I will slag you and your kind everywhere I can—as you most certainly deserve it.
Due to limited studio hours, I’m also unable to offer folio assessment, act as a mentor for students or provide other specific advice, much as I would like to.
Do you do school visits and talks?
I am currently unavailable for school visits due to other work commitments.
